How HST works for small businesses

HST in Ontario is 13%: 5% federal and 8% provincial. Once you are registered, you charge HST on taxable sales, claim back the HST you pay on business expenses as input tax credits, and send CRA the difference with each return.

Most businesses must register once their taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. Below that, you are a small supplier and registration is optional. Some sales, such as most medical services, are exempt; others, such as basic groceries and exports, are zero-rated but still count toward the $30,000.
